A trend-focused database aimed at Christian leaders to support informed decision-making and theological reflection.

The Compass offers insights and understanding of social, technological, ecclesial, educational, and cultural trends relevant to the church. Understanding the current trends shaping our country, communities, and local church helps Christian leaders to faithfully and intentionally consider how to respond.

The content within the Compass is intended to empower local churches, Christian leaders, and denominations to understand our current cultural context while also supporting Christian leaders and communities to imagine new futures for ministry and mission. Join the conversation today.

The Futuring Compass is fluid data base of signals of change relevant to the future church. They are categorized as: drivers of change, trends, emerging considerations, and weak signals.

We have identified three primary drivers of change, which represent broad forces influencing, creating, and shaping trends, emerging considerations , and weak signals. Trends are understood as established signals of change, emerging considerations are not yet established/mature but are becoming more prominent, and weak signals are still on the perimeter of society and may not materialize, but if they do, would have SIGNIFICANT impact on the church.

To deepen our reflection and analysis of what these trends, under in each drive of change trends are categorized as: Macro, Micro, and Ecclesial. Macro trends have quantitative and qualitative data patterns of change affecting Canadian society broadly. Micro trends are more focused on changes occurring at more of an individuals or ‘day-to-day’ local level. Finally, ecclesial trends highlight the way in which the macro and micro trends are surfacing within the Christian Church. These trends may be correlated directly to specific macro or micro trends, or just generally to a Driver of Change.

These trends were identified by intentional interpretation and epistemological analysis to identify the system/social level (Macro, Micro, and Ecclesial) impacted by the signal of change and consider the underlying social forces informing the respective signal of change (worldviews, ‘isms’, social theories, belief structures).

Trends are updated, removed, and added regularly. Hopefully the Futuring Compass can offer some direct to the changes happening around you.

An illuminating scriptural portrayal of futuring is depicted
in Habakkuk 2:1-2 (The Message):

“What’s God going to say to my questions? I’m braced for the worst.
I’ll climb to the lookout tower and scan the horizon.
I’ll wait to see what God says,
how he’ll answer my complaint.
And then God answered: ‘Write this.
Write what you see.
Write it out in big block letters
so that it can be read on the run.’”
