Helping institutions
design curriculum for
changing futures
Curriculum does more than organize courses. It shapes what students come to know, how they are formed, and how they are prepared to respond to a changing world.
The Futuring Hub’s Anticipatory Curriculum Development approach helps theological schools, Christian institutions, and ministry formation programs evaluate, reimagine, and redesign curriculum in light of emerging cultural, educational, technological, vocational, and ecclesial change.
The contexts surrounding theological education and Christian leadership are shifting. Learners are changing. Churches are changing. Communities are changing. The forms of knowledge, leadership, vocation, and formation needed for the future are also changing.
Anticipatory Curriculum Development helps institutions move beyond reactive curriculum revision toward a more faithful, strategic, and future-oriented process.
It helps your institution ask:
Anticipatory Curriculum Development can be scaled to fit your institution’s needs. Some schools begin with a focused foresight and educational context report, while others move through a full curriculum transformation process.
Each pathway builds progressively, helping your institution move from understanding the future, to evaluating the current curriculum, to imagining and implementing faithful curriculum change.
A Cumulative, Sequential Pathway

Start with the future.
We help your institution identify the trends, signals, and drivers of change shaping education, formation, ministry, and work.
Understand the curriculum you already have.
We map the current program to clarify outcomes, learning experiences, structure, and alignment.
Interpret how change may affect your curriculum.
We connect emerging trends to key curriculum dimensions and develop future-oriented scenarios for institutional reflection.
Reimagine the assumptions beneath the curriculum.
Using layered analysis, we help your institution examine inherited models, surface deeper assumptions, and develop a renewed future-oriented educational vision.
Move from insight to curriculum possibilities.
Through facilitated workshops, we help teams identify what to preserve, adapt, and create in light of future pressures and institutional commitments.
Develop an actionable pathway for curriculum transformation.
This full process translates future-oriented insight into defined curriculum changes, implementation priorities, timelines, and conditions for success.
Explore the Anticipatory Pastoral Leadership framework
As institutions rethink curriculum for changing futures, they must also ask what kinds of leaders they are forming.
The Anticipatory Pastoral Leadership Framework identifies six research-based competencies for forming Christian leaders who can serve faithfully in present and emerging ministry contexts.
Developed through a two-stage Delphi study with Canadian Christian leaders and supported by horizon scanning toward 2035, the framework moves theological education from alignment with current needs toward anticipatory formation for uncertain futures.
At the center are graduates preparing to lead in a changing world. Around them are six interrelated competencies that support faithful, adaptive, and future-ready ministry leadership.
Anticipatory Curriculum Development is a structured, futures-informed approach to curriculum evaluation and design.
It brings together curriculum theory, futures thinking, theological reflection, implementation planning, and human-centred design to help institutions develop programs that are:
Rather than treating curriculum as a static structure, this approach understands curriculum as a living system, something that must be continually interpreted, reimagined, and aligned in response to changing realities
The process can be adapted to fit the size, capacity, timeline, and goals of each institution.
We identify major forces shaping education, formation, professional practice, and institutional context.
We map the current curriculum, including outcomes, structure, learning progression, and alignment.
We translate future-oriented insights into curriculum-relevant pressures, opportunities, and possible future contexts.
We examine the assumptions, systems, narratives, and theological commitments shaping the curriculum.
We generate redesign possibilities across outcomes, learning experiences, program structure, and assessment.
We organize redesign ideas into coherent strategic directions.
We develop a practical curriculum action plan that supports decision-making, implementation, and ongoing review.
We begin by looking beyond the current curriculum to the emerging conditions shaping learners, institutions, churches, communities, and professional practice.
Curriculum renewal is not driven by novelty. It is grounded in your institution’s mission, commitments, and educational vocation.
The process creates space to ask not only what should change, but what should be preserved, deepened, or faithfully reimagined.
The goal is not simply another report. The process leads toward clear priorities, curriculum decisions, implementation pathways, and review mechanisms.

Theo-futures research is a methodological approach developed within the Futuring Hub. It incorporates the God-given human ability to consider the consequences of present actions on the future and places it within a practical theological perspective. Theo-futures research represents an interdisciplinary practical theological research approach which seeks to explore the intersection of Christian beliefs, values, and practices with evolving trends and future possibilities. Rooted in discernment, theological reflection, and faithful imagination, theo-futures research cultivates practical wisdom and futures-oriented perspectives, inspiring transformative action as Christian leaders serve the mission of God in the church and the world.
The primary focus of theo-futures research is to consider and reflect upon possible, probable, or potential futures of the church. It involves analyzing and considering weak signals, emerging considerations, and current trends happening within society broadly, and then prayerfully discerning what these insights could mean for the future church. Grounded in humility and a sense of wonder, theo-futures research seeks to peek over the horizon and discover practical future insights that may be relevant to the church and its mission. Just as Moses sent scouts into the Promised Land, futures thinking can help Christian leaders to identify possible futures of the church and even discern how to shape those futures.
